The legacy of Philip II
Feel at court as you stroll through the old town of San Lorenzo or visit the Silla de Felipe II to see the Monastery in all its splendour
The Monastery and Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984. Built by order of Felipe II in recognition of the battle of San Quintín in 1557, it has numerous spaces of the highest historical, artistic and cultural value, such as the palatial quarters of the Asturias and the Bourbons, the library and the basilica, in a privileged natural setting, the Sierra de Guadarrama.
