It is housed in the former Palace of the Counts of Paredes, better known as the “Casa de San Isidro”, as it is the place where, according to tradition, the Saint lived and died.

In the newly built building, remains of the original construction are preserved: a 16th century Renaissance courtyard, the 17th century chapel, decorated in 1789 with tempera paintings by Zacarías González Velázquez, and the so-called “Well of the Miracle”, in which San Isidro, according to tradition, saved his son from drowning by miraculously raising the water up to the curbstone.

The main theme of the Museum focuses on the remote origins of the territory of Madrid and on the foundation and subsequent development of the city until the transfer of the Court in 1561.

It has a large number of archaeological and palaeontological collections, as well as other unique pieces and works of art.

The permanent exhibition is organised into three exhibition areas: Before Madrid, with collections that show the way of life of the hunter-gatherers, the first producing societies, the arrival of the Romans and the Visigothic period; Mayrit: Madrid, which presents the history of the city from its foundation by the Muslims, its incorporation into the Castilian kingdom and its growth until it became the seat of the Court under Philip II; and San Isidro, dedicated to the Madrid saint and his wife.
