The great expressionist painter
From November 12, 2024 to February 9, 2025
Gabriele Münter (1877-1962) was one of the founders of The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) , the legendary group of expressionist artists based in Munich. In her works, with precise lines and intense colours, the German painter immerses the viewer in her private world. Through her keen eye, lovers, friends, everyday objects, landscapes or herself are reduced to their essence.
Through more than a hundred paintings, drawings, engravings and photographs, the exhibition proposes to discover an artist who rebelled against the limitations that loomed over women of her time and who managed to become one of the outstanding figures of German expressionism at the beginning of the 20th century . It begins with an extensive chapter dedicated to her beginnings as a photographer. The book explores the art of amateur painter and examines how his relationship with this modern medium of expression, less codified than traditional fine art, was fundamental to his later development. The following section presents his pictorial creations in a chronological and thematic overview that begins with the works produced during his travels through Europe and North Africa with his partner Wassily Kandinsky , and continues with an extensive chapter dedicated to his masterpieces from the period of The Blue Rider . Finally, it focuses on his exile in Scandinavia during the First World War and the different avenues of expression he found after his return to Germany . Throughout his long career, Münter repeatedly demonstrated his ability to adapt, his tireless desire to experiment and his lack of prejudices towards anything new or different.
The exhibition aims to showcase the wealth of an artist who is well known in Germany but who has only recently begun to enjoy greater relevance in the rest of Europe. With four of her paintings in the permanent collections, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is hosting its first retrospective in Spain. and continues in this way with its work of researching and vindicating the work and the place that many great artists deserve in History.
