Cirque du Soleil begins its most iconic production, Alegría – Bajo Una Nueva Luz, in Madrid (Puerta del Ángel Stage), which is reinvented so that a new generation falls in love with this show and that its long-time fans continue to love it as much as the first day. After a Spanish tour lasting almost a year in which it has visited Barcelona, Málaga, Alicante and Seville, Alegría – Bajo una nueva luz will end its performances in Madrid on February 16, with no possibility of staying beyond this date.
Alegría – In a New Light. Premiered in April 1994 by the creative team behind Cirque du Soleil’s early successes, Alegría became one of Cirque du Soleil’s most beloved shows; a fan favorite that has greatly helped establish the company’s signature style. Touring around the world until the end of 2013, Alegría captivated more than 14 million spectators in 255 cities in 40 countries. Alegría was the first Cirque du Soleil show to be presented in Madrid and Barcelona in 1998, beginning a long love story between the company and the Spanish public.
Through new stage direction, musical arrangements, acrobatics, choreography, costumes, makeup and set design, Alegría – Bajo Una Nueva Luz reinvents the original classic while capturing the emotions, melodies and essence of its success. With an international cast of 54 acrobats, clowns, musicians and singers, Alegría – Bajo Una Nueva Luz is a contemporary revival that captures all the emotion, magic and joy of Cirque du Soleil that has enamored the world.
At the heart of a once-great kingdom that has lost its king, Joy witnesses the power struggle between the old order and the youth fighting for hope and renewal. As the court jester clumsily attempts to seize the throne, a growing desire for change surges through the streets to challenge the status quo and bring joy to the world.
