COME AND DISCOVER THE MAGIC
The Teatro de la Zarzuela, a unit dependent on the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM), has presented its 2024/2025 season, the first programmed by its director Isamay Benavente, who has defended a line of continuity with the work of recent years, but expanding its artistic and social radius of action, with new initiatives - such as a cycle specifically designed for early childhood (from 0 to 5 years) -, a greater effort in the internationalization of the genre, the expansion of the dance offer and a transversal perspective of respect and recognition of the legacy, paying special attention to the contribution of women in the past and present, making visible their contributions as artists and creators.
As for the lyrical offering, the new season includes absolute premieres and revivals of historic productions, spanning different forms of the genre, including the grand zarzuela (La del manojo de Rosas and La tabernera del puerto), opera (Marina, Patagonia and Domitila), revue (La corte de Faraón), the tonadilla (Cómicas) and the small genre (El bateo, La revoltosa and La Gran Vía).
Another area of work under the new management is to create strong and stable ties with other theatres and auditoriums, not only in Spain, but also in America, so that a public theatre such as the Zarzuela can reach out to all audiences and be able to democratise its offering beyond its corresponding geographical area.
Among the highlights of the season will be the Chamber Musical Theatre cycle, which arrives in this new season with more titles and renewed energy. In addition to the usual co-production between the Teatro de la Zarzuela and the Juan March Foundation, which this year is specifically building bridges with America through the chamber opera Domitila by João Guilherme Ripper, in a new production by these two institutions and the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo in Bogotá, La Zarzuela will also feature the opera Patagonia by Sebastián Errázuriz, a production by the Teatro Biobío and the Teatro del Lago in Chile that won the Ópera XXI Award for the best Latin American production in 2023. This cycle will also include the already traditional Proyecto Zarza – a zarzuela made by young people for young people – which on this occasion will bring one of the most popular short genre titles: La Gran Vía by Federico Chueca and Joaquín Valverde, performed as usual by a group of young singers chosen after an audition process and for the first time in collaboration with another of the INAEM units, the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (JONDE). To close this cycle of Chamber Musical Theatre, the public will be able to enjoy a much-needed show: Cómicas, a new production by the theatre dedicated to some of the artists who were unique, transgressive and brave in the 18th century.
