Torre del Homenaje del castillo - Casa de la Tercia - Wines and Oils
Contemplating the impressive figure of the Torre del Homenaje (Homage Tower), we can imagine how grandiose the castle of Villarejo de Salvanés must have been. Built on the site of an old Muslim watchtower, its mission was to serve as a defence against Arab attacks and, with this purpose in mind, it was the basic piece of military control of the Order of Santiago. The commander of this Order established his residence in Villarejo. You can learn about the importance of its history in the Casa de la Tercia and in the interesting Interpretation Centre located inside the Torre del Homenaje (Homage Tower). From the top you can contemplate the spectacular views over the Alcarria Madrileña: a landscape of olive and holm oak groves bathed by the streams of the Tagus. Villarejo also has a surprising collection of machinery and objects related to the cinema.
Its patron saint festivities are in October, but in recent years Villarejo has become famous for its fun Halloween and All Saints' Day festivities, in which the whole town is themed for the occasion, including a "Passage of Terror". As far as gastronomy is concerned, Villarejo has specialised in a tradition that is very much our own: "el tapeo". Because great palates demand small pleasures.
