In 1949, substitute teacher Clement Mathieu arrives at the boarding school “Bottom of the pond”,
where Director Rachin has imposed a harsh and rigorous regime with no room for
music. Mathieu, a former unlucky composer, breaks the rules to discover the
beauty of the world to young people educated under the harshness of the Second World War
World Cup. With this approach, inspired by his own childhood and an old classic of French cinema, Christophe Barratier created one of the truly unforgettable films of the early 21st century, enhanced by the sublime music of Bruno Coulais.
“The Chorus, the musical” is not just an adaptation of a film that we all love. It is, at the same time, a commitment to talk about the need for music, for art, for personal growth. As the ancient philosophers and thinkers said, it is not just that music tames the beasts (in this case, children who are more unruly than ferocious), but that art is what makes us authentically human. Without sensitivity, without delicacy, without the nuances that illuminate the soul and personality, we would not be free, much less would we get to know what others are like inside.
“The Chorus, the musical” talks about forgotten children but also about the path that crosses the rainbow and leads to the light of April. It talks about innocence, about play, about love… It talks about effort and solidarity, about work and enthusiasm… It talks about life. It talks about art.
Pedro Víllora, playwright.
